Update #6: May 1, 2015

Posted by Bill Schelly on May 1, 2015

Kurtzman fans and readers:  I promised I would post the info on the mass magazines that cover Harvey Kurtzman, The Man Who Created Mad. Here we go: The May issue of Playboy reviewed the book and deemed it their “Book of the Month” for May. The May 7th issue of Rolling Stone published a short review. (It’s the issue with the Hulk on the cover.) But the best story thus far is on the web site of The Atlantic, a venerable, prestigious publication. Here’s the URL: http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2015/04/mad-man/391838/ Copy and paste that into your browser, and you should be good to go. This is actually a combination review and interview, since Steve Heller sent me questions, and quoted from my answers throughout. I have to say, I’m bowled over by the coverage this book is getting. There’s been a lot of talk about it on Facebook, and the response has been gratifying. Bud Plant told me he sold out of his initial order immediately, and has ordered more. I’ve got to believe it’s selling well, but we won’t have figures for a little while yet. All very exciting!!

“Could NOT go to sleep until I finished reading Bill Schelly’s magnificent HARVEY KURTZMAN: THE MAN WHO CREATED MAD (2015, Fantagraphics Books), which is a grand, glorious, and profoundly overdue biography of one of the true greats of American comics.” — Steve Bissette
