Update #16 – March 7, 2017 – Sense of Wonder, My Life in Comic Fandom
Posted by Bill Schelly on March 7, 2017
Okay, folks, here’s just a bit about my next book, which will be an expanded version of the above captioned tome!
Back in Year 2000, when I was putting the original book together, I conceived it as a memoir of my experience in comic fandom of the 1960s and early 1970s. The story in the book ended in 1974 when I’d finished college, and was moving to Seattle to find fame and fortune. It was published by TwoMorrows, and sold surprisingly well—better than most of my Hamster Press books that came before (or after). I got a lot of feedback from readers, and was pleased with the reaction. That, I figured, was the end of it.
As you might imagine, a lot has happened in my life since the time I was 22 and today, when I recently turned 65. A lifetime. And I began to think, “there’s a lot more to this story.” In particular, all the incredible things that have happened since I returned to fandom in 1990. Although my first book (the biography of silent film star Harry Langdon) was published in 1982, my ongoing saga as a writer didn’t really get going until I was 44 in 1995. That’s when the first edition of The Golden Age of Comic Fandom came out, the first of some 20 books that I’ve written or compiled since then. This all led up to my Harvey Kurtzman biography, which received a Will Eisner Comics Industry Award last year.
All of which made me think: fandom helped me get started as a writer as a teenager, and then, fandom helped me become a true professional writer later in life. So “my life in comic fandom” has become a much bigger story, one that has lots of twists and turns, and what I think are interesting developments. Hence, I began thinking about “completing the story” of Sense of Wonder by writing “Part 2,” and then publishing them together in one book. It would be about how I got from “point A” to “point B,” and include lots of anecdotes about people in comics, funny stories, weird coincidences, and, maybe, a little insight.
What I can tell you now is that Sense of Wonder, My Life in Comic Fandom – THE WHOLE STORY will be published by North Atlantic Books, the same company that did such a stellar job on my re-issued Otto Binder biography last year (Otto Binder: The Life and Work of a Comic Book and Science Fiction Visionary). I’ve completed a second draft, so I have a pretty good idea what it will include. I can assure you — it’s gonna be good!! So – check back here from time to time. I’ll let you know when it’s nearing publication.
Meanwhile, don’t forget that my book John Stanley, Giving Life to Little Lulu, will be out in late May. You’re gonna dig it!
