Update #15 – July 22, 2016 – Eisner Award winner !!!
Posted by Bill Schelly on July 25, 2016
In a ceremony hosted by John Barrowman and others on Friday, June 22, my biography Harvey Kurtzman, The Man Who Created MAD and Revolutionized Humor in America won the Eisner Award for Best Comics-Related Book! Since I wasn’t able to attend, I gave Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth a message to read, if I won:
“I’ve never won an award in my life, so if you’re hearing these words, then you know I’m going to be in total shock. But, if I was ever to receive an Eisner award, I’m glad it was for my biography of the great Harvey Kurtzman, because it was a dream project from start to finish. I want to thank everyone who helped me, including my publisher, who suggested the book in the first place. Kurtzman was one of the true geniuses of comic art, and it was an honor to tell his story. Thank you very much.”
I just want to reiterate my thanks to the many, many people who helped me with this monumental project, especially John Benson, the Kurtzman family, Alan Hutchinson for his many art scans, E. B. Boatner for the wonderful photographs, as well as Al Jaffee, Hugh Hefner, R. Crumb and Arnold Roth, among so many others. Also, my editors Gary Groth and Kristy Valenti. And, I think this is a good time to also thank everyone who voted for my book, and also those who bought and read it in the first place. I couldn’t write books if no one bought them!
Finally, I have to say this is a perfect “capper” for a project that began five years ago. I’m still somewhat in shock that it actually won the award — but I pinch myself and I’m not dreaming, so I guess it really happened. I was first nominated 20 years ago (for The Golden Age of Comic Fandom), but receiving the Eisner Award now means more to me than it would have then. I’m proud of all my books, each one was a “labor of love,” but this one was my Magnum Opus. I’m humbled and grateful for all the support and comments that I’ve received from so many of you, and am certainly not intending to “retire” from writing books.
In fact, my next book is already completed, titled John Stanley, Giving Life to Little Lulu, and it’s up for pre-orders on Amazon.com!
